Geoff North, 35th LAA. Bofors gunner on Abbekerks last voyage.<br \/>\n<\/a>One of the mysteries I never expected to solve was that of the gunners that left Abbekerk early Ferbuary 1942 in Oosthaven, Sumatra. Then I recieved an email from Peter North who found a picture of Abbekerk between the old stuff of his father: Lt Geoffrey North of the 35th Light Anti Aircraft Regiment.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msabbekerk.nl\/?page_id=571\" target=\"_self\">Walter MacNab, DEMS gunner on Abbekerk<br \/>\n<\/a>There were 4 DEMS gunners aboard Abbekerk as part of her \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpermanent\u00e2\u20ac\u009d anti aircraft-defences. Walter MacNab&nbsp;(now 83 years old) was one of them and tells me his story<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msabbekerk.nl\/?page_id=118\" target=\"_self\">Willard A \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Bill\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Heath, US serviceman, evacuated from Java&nbsp;on Abbekerk<\/a>,<br \/>\nWillard A &#8220;Bill&#8221; Heath, member of Idaho&#8217;s 148th Field Artillery was stationed in Bandoeng at the HQ Far East Air Force (FEAF) and evacuated from Java by Abbekerk. Here is his story as published before. Bill told me a lot more and I hope to add some of those stories here later<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"The Sinking of Abbekerk and other war memories (Dutch)\" target=\"_self\">The Sinking of Abbekerk and other war memories of&nbsp;Abbekerk&#8221;s 3de Mate (in Dutch for now)<\/a><br \/>\nIn 1995 in the Dutch magazine \u00e2\u20ac\u0153KW wij praaien U\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Abbekerk 3de Mate tells about his warmemories. It is in Dutch for now. Maybe I will translate it later. Abbekerk evacuated ground Personnel from TJilitjap, Java, februari 1942.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msabbekerk.nl\/?page_id=115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My Fighting Congregation<\/a><br \/>\nThe Tjilitjap evacuation from the point of view of Chaplain William Taggert, february 1942.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msabbekerk.nl\/?page_id=415\">SS Moena and MS Abbekerk during the London Blitz (in Dutch)<\/a><br \/>\nOn September 7th, 1940 the Germans started bombing London as part of<br \/>\nthe Battle of Brittain. Abbekerk was in Albert Dock at that time, in<br \/>\nthe centre of the first bombings. When she got adrift she was towed and<br \/>\nmoured to Moena another Dutch ship in the dock. This is her part of the<br \/>\nstory (in dutch for now) from J.W. Roevers book: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153De Nederland in de<br \/>\nTweede Wereldoorlog\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msabbekerk.nl\/?page_id=637\" target=\"_self\">No Ordinairy War, the eventfull career of U604<\/a><br \/>\nThis book by Christian Prag was published only recently. Abbekerk was torpedoed by U-604, so I was surprised to read that a book was written about this U-boat. Since I know Abbekerk was the first and rather easy victim of U604, I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t expect more then a few pages about the event but hoped it would be an intersting read anyway. I was right on both.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3>Newspaper articles<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color: #f8f8f8;\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msabbekerk.nl\/?page_id=152\">Jan Eise Hellings<\/a><br \/>\nA short artikel (in dutch for now) about Jan Eise Hellings (1889-1942). He was Master of the freighter Moena and was anchored in London next to Abbekerk and bombed during the Blitz (september 1940). Later he fled Java on Poelau Bras the same day as Abbekerk, but he was killed when the ship was sunk by Japanese airplane (march 1942).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msabbekerk.nl\/?page_id=426\">Newspaper Articles (Dutch)<br \/>\n<\/a>Several newpaper Arcticles form the Dutch the <a href=\"http:\/\/kranten.kb.nl\/index.html\"><span style=\"color: #7f1d1d;\">online historical newspaperarchive<\/span><\/a> . All pre-war, but quite interesting since they give some background on her building and her launch. And for example why she was build in Danzig\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msabbekerk.nl\/?page_id=127\">Wheat for Holland<br \/>\n<\/a>Something completely different: 16 januari 1940 a local newspaper announces the arrival of six cargoships with wheat. During the war his path crosses Abbekerks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 several times. Kester, USS Marblehead 1940-1942, now USN Asiatic Fleet reunion president and editor of the China Gunboatman THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE SOUTH CHINA, YANGTZE PATROL, ASIATIC FLEET used information from this website to tell the story of two wounded sailors from the Marblehead that were evacuated on Abbekerk. A short comment of one of the sailors, Mr Oscar M. Rudie, is on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msabbekerk.nl\/?page_id=112\" target=\"_self\">introduction page,<\/a> his whole story can be read on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ussmarblehead.com\/The_Sailors\/Rudie\/rudie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USS MArblehead website.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>A Blue Sea of Blood: Deciphering the Mysterious Fate of the USS Edsall<\/strong><br \/>\nHistorian Donald Kehn very recently wrote a book about the destroyer USS Edsall. She was one of the warships fighting desperatly around Java at the time Abbekerk escaped.
